Being Inspired by Yoga

My yoga practice has changed a lot since I began this journey over 17 years ago, and for the first time in a long time, I am okay with that. I used to take photos of myself doing ridiculous poses, not trying to one up anyone else, but because I wanted people to know that with a consistent practice, our bodies are miraculous and can do hard things. Nowadays, I am inspiring myself because most of the poses that I am sharing and took in my yoga youth, aren’t currently attainable for me. Once I moved to Colorado (checks calendar) six years ago as of December 8, I put my yoga practice on the back burner and focused on the mountains. I still taught and practiced, but nowhere near the amount that I did when I lived in a mountain free state like Texas.

Arm Balance at Hamilton Pool, Texas

During that six years, I’ve been rescued by Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and carried down the back of Green Mountain West on a stretcher in three feet of snow for a knee injury that required surgery for a torn medial meniscus. I’ve been escorted down the trail from Chasm Lake by the Rocky Mountain National Park Rangers for a severely sprained ankle and possible concussion, and I’ve had surgery on a torn ulnar ligament in my left thumb. In hindsight, maybe it is more than time to resume my yoga practice because clearly a little balance is needed in my life! The worst injury I ever had as a full-time yoga instructor was a measly little pulled hamstring that eventually healed on its own.

A little over a month ago, I quit my full-time job and decided to resume a regular yoga teaching practice. It’s been a deep dive into learning all the things that other instructors have been doing since the pandemic. As a middle-aged yogi who is healing from that previously mentioned thumb surgery, my classes are no longer filled with chaturangas, arm balances and handstands, but they are still filled with music that guides the flows and movement that builds strength and flexibility, focus and balance. My classes are for anyone who is new to yoga, anyone who has decided to dive back into a long postponed practice, and to those recovering from an illness or injury.

For the past three weeks, I’ve been creating new playlists (one of my favorite things to do) and new flowing sequences for the time-impaired and for everyone in between. I even started offering a mid-week meditation class with a guided meditation at the end. I never stopped loving yoga, I just fell in love with the mountains that were whisked away from me as a baby born right here in Boulder, Colorado’s now demolished Community Hospital. Yoga is making me stronger and more focused in ways that will only enhance my passion for the outdoors, for hiking up difficult mountains and for the jaw-dropping views that it provides.

If you want to explore yoga again or for the first time in the comfort and convenience of your own home, I’d like to invite you to try a yoga class on me.
